Week Two: IV Catheters and Fluids Flashcards
What is the ‘net effect’ or shock?
Not enough perfusion of tissues and cells so they devitalize then die
What does cardiogenic shock result from?
Heart pump failure
What does obstructive shock result from?
A physical obstruction in the circulatory system (like heartworms, pericardial effusion, pulmonary embolism, and gastric torsions)
What happens to the capillary beds during distributive shock?
Fluids leak out of capillary beds into “third spaces”
What are some causes of distributive shock?
Sepsis, anaphylaxis, trauma, neurogenic problems
What results from hypovolemic shock?
Decreased intravascular volume
Blood or fluid loss can be ‘lost’ internally or externally
Vomiting diarrhea diuresis
