Define value
‘Avalue is an abstract concept encompassing a person’s fundamental beliefs and ideals about the worth of something and acts as a standard to guide one’s behaviour.
Define ethics
Ethicsis the study of human values in relation to understanding what we should do and why. It is formalised through a branch of philosophy referred to as moral philosophy which focuses on discussion of what is right or wrong, or what is good or bad (Smith, 2017).
Define morals

‘Ethics or morals are concepts that require translation into action. The capacity of individuals to act independently and to make their own choices is calledagency.

What does Ethical sensibility mean?
Ability to recognise the ‘ethical moment’ when an ethical challenge presents itself.
What does Ethical responsiveness mean?
Ability and willingness to respond to the ethical challenge.
What does ethical accountability mean?
Ability and willingness to accept responsibility for one’s ethical behaviour and to learn from the experience of exercising ethical agency.
What does Ethical character mean?
Cultivated dispositions that allow one to act as one believes one ought to act.
What does Ethical valuing mean?
Valuing in a conscious and critical way, which aligns with good ethical character and ethical integrity.
What does Transformative ethical leadership mean?
Commitment and proven ability to create a culture that facilitates the exercise of ethical agency, a culture in which people do the right thing because it is the right thing to do.
What is the NCNZ Code of Conduct (2012)
A set of standards set by Nursing Council of New Zealand (NCNZ) that is describes the expected behaviour nurses are meant to uphold.
What is the intent of the NCNZ code of conduct (2012)?
“Nurses are expected to uphold exemplary standards of conduct while undertaking their professional role.”
“Because nurses must have the trust of the public to undertake their professional role, they must also have a high standard of behaviour in their personal lives.”

Ethics that relates specifically to life in health care includes the following subject areas

What does advocacy mean?
Speaking on behalf of another who is unable to do so themselves
Aim is to make sure patient’s rights are being upheld
Needs to be centered around patient’s goals and desires
