Q

When would you use a Nasal Cannula? (Flow Rates)

A

Nasal Cannulas are simple and effective for low level 02 admin. Allows for speaking, eating Used for flow rates from 1-6 L/min. Over 4L/min humidification is required to prevent drying of the nasal mucosa.

Notes: Watch for skin breakdown behind ears w/ long term use

Q

Why use an Incentive Spirometer? Basic Procedure?

A

Provides additional visual incentive for deep breathing exercises. Used in combination with deep breathing and coughing post-abd or thoracic operations to lower risk of pneumonia. Comes in volume or flow rate versions.

Procedure- Position in high fowlers, instruct to breath out completely, use mouth piece for slow and steady inhalation to max inhalation, hold for 3 s and release normally. Repeat 5 -10 times per work out sesh followed by controlled coughing. 3 times a day?

Flow and volume versions.
Test pre-op for baseline. Expect 1/2 to3/4 of baseline post op.
