week one Flashcards
what is Supply Chain
The network of all the individuals, organizations, resources, activities and
technology involved in the creation and sale of a product, from the delivery of
source materials from the supplier to the manufacturer, through to its
eventual delivery to the end user. (Kahraman & Öztaysi, 2014)
wat is Supply Chain Management
The management of upstream and downstream relationships with suppliers
and customers to deliver superior customer value at less cost to the supply
chain as a whole. (Christopher, 1995, p. 5
wat is logistics
The modern interpretation of logistics has its origins in military
operations, where it was used to describe the activities related
to the efficient and effective distribution and storage of supplies
and personnel.
logistics is about… (three defenitions)
logistics is about…
-Meeting the requirements of the customer
-Using a process perspective
-In the most efficient manner
Meeting whar recuierments for costumers.
Ensuring the availability
1. of the right product (or service)
2. in the right quantity
3. in the right condition
4. at the right place
5. at the right time
6. for the right customer
7. at the right cost
That part of supply chain management that plans, implements, and controls
- the efficient and effective storage and forward and reverse flow
- of goods, services, and related information
- between the point of origin and the point of consumption
- in order to meet customers’ requirements.
(Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals, 2015)

interralation of marketing and logistics.
Marketing places emphasis on customer satisfaction, while Logistics
facilitates:
Marketing places emphasis on customer satisfaction, while Logistics facilitates:
Place: Providing the product at the right time, in the right quantity in an undamaged
condition.
Price: In a cost-efficient manner.
Product: Determining inventory levels, order quantities, re-order points, production
planning etc.
Promotion: Availability (avoiding stock-outs)
Achieving customer satisfaction requires close coordination
between logistics and marketing!
Extra costs are incurred when Logistics and Marketing are not aligned. examples
-A company needs extra inventory to support a marketing promotional
activity. If not communicated to Supply Chain on time, inventory may notbe available, and the company will incur costs to acquire the needed inventory and produce the product on short notice.
- There often is a mismatch in communication between marketing and supply chain because the two department have different priorities:
Marketing is focused on revenues, while Supply Chain on costs.
how to calculate profit
From a (very simplified) accounting point of view, the formula below is how costs
and revenues are related to the company’s profit.
Profit= total sales - total expances.
→ communication between Sales & Marketing and Supply Chain is critical to a
company’s financial well-being
