Week One Flashcards
What do sounds do for films
Add clarity, help tell the story as clearly as possible
Explain the “film hierarchy”
Dialogue ( talking) is always in the foreground (front), lesser sounds and people and things are always in the background
What are the three sound elements
Speech, Music and Sound Effects
Draw the three sound elements triangle with combinations
Top of triangle: Speech
Left side add: part music, part speech (sinnging lyrics)
Right side add: part speech, part effects (crowds party sounds)
Bottom Left point of triangle : Music
Middle: Part effects, part music like humming
Bottom right corner: Effects
What is the most obvious sound narrative in a film?
Speech
Does speech just include talking?
No speech can include other vocal sounds like the birds cawing in the scene from Lord of the Rings when they rescue Gandalf from the tower or laughing… but ony if it helps tell the story
Why are sound fx important?
They can provide extra informtion
What are offscreen sound effects used for?
Usually to “create” things we can’t or don’t see in the but will identify an object an animal or even persons. Impotantly they can draw our attention to offscreen stuff
Provide an example of an offscreen sound fx
A scene with character off set shouting orders at soldiers in a base camp
What are ambient sound fx
sounds that are NOT creating objects but “confirming” what we expect them to sound like. Importantly they DO NOT draw our attention away or distract us
Provide an example of ambient sound fx
A fire crackling or a tank creaking as it rolls by in a video game
Does Hiearchy matter in traditional Sound Fx design?
Yes!
List 5 things the term “Underscoring” refers to

What is the films narrative register
The sounds that we hear that help tell the story, for example orchestral music would not be playing in the scene if it was real but the audience hears it as part of the story telling..
