Week Five Flashcards
What regions is the pharynx divided into?
-Nasopharynx
-Oropharynx
-Laryngopharynx ( AKA hypopharynx)
What are the muscles of the pharynx?
-Superior pharyngeal constrictor
-Middle pharyngeal constrictor
-Inferior pharyngeal constrictor
-Stylopharyngeus
-Salpingopharyngeus
-Palatopharyngeus
List the outer circular layer of muscles and their purpose
-Superior pharyngeal constrictor
-Middle pharyngeal constrictor
-Inferior pharyngeal constrictor
-CONSTRICT the pharynx in a sequential fashion to MOVE FOOD DOWN
THYROPHARYNGEUS…?????
List the inner longitudinal muscles and their purpose
- Stylopharyngeus
- Salpingopharyngeus
- Palatopharyngeus
- SHORTENS and WIDENS the pharynx to get food away from the airway as soon as possible
-Muscle fibres run longitudinally
What are the sections of the inferior pharyngeal constrictor?
Thyropharyngeus and Cricopharyngeus
What is the innervation of the muscles of the pharynx?
Pharyngeal plexus EXCEPT the stylopharyngeus (CN IX, glossopharyngeal)
How many tonsils are there?
Three sets of tonsils
Name the tonsils and their approximate location in the pharynx
1) Palatine
- Laryngopharynx
2) Pharyngeal (AKA adenoids)
- Nasopharynx
3) Lingual
- Oropharynx
What is the purpose of velar closure?
-Important for speech and swallowing (don’t want food coming out your nose)
List the muscles of the Velar (soft palate)
Elevators
- Levator veil palatini
- Musculus uvulae
Depressors
- Palatopharyngeus
- Palatoglossus
- Tensor veil palatini
What CN innervates the velar muscles?
Pharyngeal plexus EXCEPT tensor veli palatini ( CN V trigeminal)
