What impact did the May Edicts have?
An all-night protest session in the Paris Parlement.
Provincial parlements sent remonstrances to the Royal Court.
Radical pamphlets were produced attacking Brienne and Lamoignon.
There were demands everywhere for an Estates-General.
Sporadic risings broke out across the country.
What happened with Brienne’s demand for an enlarged don gratuit?
In June 1788, this demand was partially granted.
They offered a quarter of what was being asked.

In Grenoble, royal troops who had arrived to restore order were pelted with stones and roof tiles.
What did Brienne do in July 1788?
Suspended payments from the royal treasury.
This meant there would be no more loans as France could not afford to pay the interest.

8th August 1788, after the loans dried up.

What did Necker do when he first became Finance Minister?
The May Edicts concerning the parlements were rescinded.
Some temporary loans were raised.
