Why were the Committee of General Security becoming increasingly hostile to Robespierre?
Many of the CGS were atheist and anti-clerics so were angry at the cult of supreme being.
The were not consulted over the Law of 22 Prairial.
The surveillance and police network set up by Robespierre and Saint-Just also infringed on CGS power.
Why was the Convention turning against Robespierre?
Deputies of ‘the Plain’ feared that Robespierre was turning himself into a dictator and becoming wary of the increasing number of executions.
Why were local governments, atheists and Catholic priests turning against Robespierre?
Local Government was breaking down because of the overload of work
Both atheists and Catholic Priests feared the future of religion under Robespierre.
What was the Coup of Thermidor?
When Robespierre returned to the CPS on 26th July, he gave a speech attacking many different groups within the CPS.
He accused them of conspiring against ‘public liberty’.
On the 27th July, a decree to arrest Robespierre along with Saint-Just, Couthon and La Bas was passed unanimously.
When was Robespierre’s trial?
28th July 1794.
He and 22 associates were found guilty and guillotined the next day.
How many members of the commune were executed?
87 out of the 95.
83 were killed in the days following Robespierre’s execution (mainly on those who had risen to his defence).
