Week 9 - Stratigraphy and geologic time Flashcards

1
Q

What is the principle of superposition?

A

Within a sequence of rock layers formed at Earth’s surface, rock layers lower in the sequence are older.

2
Q

What two things can make the principle of superpositon to difficult to interpret?

A
  1. igneous rocks that form from volcanic activity may vertically cut through horizontally arranged layers of rocks
  2. mountain building events may tilt, fold, and even flip rock layers

Q

What is a formation?

A

A large uninterrupted sequence of rock that’s made of multiple layers that share similar properties (such as mineral composition and average sediment grain size) and that all formed under similar conditions

Q

Which technique is used to absolutely date rocks? What rocks cannot be dated using this technique (and why) and what are its implications?

A

Which technique is used to absolutely date rocks? Sedimentary rocks because it is made up of other rocks, so it’s never really new. Cannot use radiometric dating alone to determine the age of dino fossils.

6
Q

How can sedimentary rocks be dated and what is a key tool in fossil dating?

A

by combining radiometric dating and the principle of superposition

if sedimentary rocks that contain fossils are found between two horizontal layer of igneous rock: igneous rock above –> the fossils must be older than; igneous rock below –> the fossils must be younger than

key tool in fossil dating = volcanic ash

Q

What key events occured during the hadeon eon?

A
  • Earth is born
  • surface of the earth was partially molten and had high volcanic acitivty
  • the moon was formed
  • by the end: the earth and cooled and large oceans covered its surface

Q

What key events happend during the archeon eon?

A
  • oldest known fossils came from here: simple single-celled organisms
  • more advanced forms later evolved in the Archean (e.g. cyanobacteria)

16
Q

What are the periods in the mesozoic era? Name in chronological order

A

triassic, jurassic, cretaecous

17
Q

What are the periods that occur in the cenozoic era? Name in chronological order

A

paleogene, neogene, the quaternary period

18
Q

What does the Cambrian period refer to?

A

dramatic diversification of aquatic life (includes trilobites)

19
Q

What is a close early relative of vertebrae and when did it evolve?

A

Pikaia, the cambrian

20
Q

what occured during the Silurian period?

A
  • evolution of jawed fish –> large predatory fish
  • primitive plant life began to flourish on land
21
Q

What events occurred during the Devonian period?

A
  • 1st forests appeared
  • huge jawed fishes (e.g Dunkleosteus)
  • 1st sharks appeared
  • lobe-finned “fishapods” (e.g. Tiktaalik) ventured onto land
22
Q

What events during the carboniferous period?

A
  • amphibians were widespread in swamps
  • reptiles (the first amniotes) evolved
23
Q

What events occurred during the permian period?

A
  • contents collided to form Pangaea
  • reptiles evolved into 3 distinct lineages: anapsids, synapsids and diapsids
  • biggest mass extinction occurred (lost trilobites)
24
Q

Why were mammals able to thrive during the cenozoic?

A

the extinction of dinos allowed mammals to evolve larger forms and fill new ecological niches

25
Q

When did modern humans evolve?

A

during the Quaternary period
