Week 9 Lecture IV Therapy Ch. 31 & 42 Flashcards
phlebitis (what, d/t, s/s
inflammation of vv.
- d/t mechanical irritation, pH/osmolality of medication being infused
- s/s: erythema (redness, warmth, pain, v. is indurated, red streak)
What actions do we take when phlebitis is present?
D/C IV, elevate extremity. and apply a warm, moist compress
Infiltration (what, d/t, s/s)
- IV fluids/meds leak into the surrounding tissue (outside v.)
- s/s: edema, coolness, pallor dampness, slowed rate of IV infusion, and fluid may be leaking from site itself
What actions do we take when infiltration occurs?
D/C IV (if safe), elevate extremity and apply a warm/cool compress (warm for normal-high pH, cold for low pH solns)
extravasation (what. s/s)
infiltration with a vesicant agent
- s/s: erythema, pain, edema, blisters, necrotic tissue (like slough), and ulceration
vesicant agent
med that can really cause tissue damage
What actions do we take when extravasation is present?
Stop infusion, aspirate remaining medication in the IV line, administer an antidote, D/C IV and apply a warm or cold compress
