What is the purpose of definitions?
Definitions clarify the meaning of words.
There are elements of definitions, what are they?
- Plain English - using language readers understand
- Basic properties (essential information)
- Objectivity (no opinions)
Types of definitions:
Parenthetical, clarifying, sentence.
Classifying the term requires what?
To be specific and precise in your classification
Differentiating the term requires what?
Differentiate the term by separating it from
every other item in its class.
What is operational definition?
Define things in active terms.
What is expanded definition?
You may need to expand the definition based on how
much detail your audience needs to know or how
much expertise they already have in the area
Expansion methods are:
- Etymology
- History and background
- Negation - what the word isn’t
- Operating principle
- Analysis of parts
- Visuals
- Comparisons and contrast
- Required materials or conditions
- Examples
What is a process analysis?
- How a process occurs
- Parts of a process usually happen in chronological order with one step leading to the next and subsequent steps being dependent on the preceding ones
How is process analysis’ written?
- Written with the level of understanding of the intended
audience in mind - Usually written in “third person”
Process analysis resembles what?
Resembles a technical essay:
- Standard paragraphs, most in a chronological pattern
- Serious, reflective phrasing
- Precise, accurate vocabulary
- Formal appearance
- Headings
- Illustrations
- Formally documentation of sources
Elements
Elements of instructions include:
- A clear title & background
- Informed content
- Visuals where possible (The less specialized the audience the more visuals are likely to be needed)
Instructions should have?
- A clear and limiting title
- States what the instructions are about
- Background information
- What is the purpose?
- Assumptions about the reader’s level of expertise.
- Introduction of technical terms used - Logically ordered steps
What do notes do in instructions?
Clarify, emphasise or describes alternatives
What do cautions do in instructions?
Identify possible mistakes that could result in injury or
equipment damage
