Week 9 - CNS Flashcards
Define a neuraxis
Directional terms relative to an imaginary line drawn through spinal cord and front of brain
3 different anatomical planes
1= Horizontal Section (Burger Bun)
2= Saggital Section (Hot dog Bun)
3= Coronal Section (Slicing Bread)
Define Miniges
Outer tough layer between skull and brain / spinal cord -subarachnoid space (cerebrospinal fluid)
INFECTION CALLED MENINGITIS
Features of the blood brain barrier
Semi-permeable to allow O2/CO2 through , useful substances (AA, Glucose , etc) but also harmful such as nicotine and heroine
4 ventricles in the ventricle system
Lateral Ventricle
Cerebral Aqueduct
Third Ventricle
Fourth Ventricle
Define Brain Placicity
Ability of the NS to change activity in response to stimulus
Features of the Midbrain
Mesencephalon :
Tectum (Auditory/Visual) and Tegmentum (Sensory + Motor)
Major pathway for sensory and motor impulses
Features of the forebrain
Diencephalon: Thalamus receiving sensory info , hippocampus maintains homeostasis
Telencephalon: hemispheres (right, left, corpus callosum, cerebral cortex)
Limbic System
4 parts of the limbic system (Forebrain)
Cingulate Gyrus (emotion control)
Fornix (links hippocampus to hypothalamus)
Amygdala (emotion / motivation)
Hippocampus (memory)
Features of the Longitudinal Fissure (Forebrain)
Divides left and right hemisphere of brain
3 major grooves form division of key lobes - frontal and parietal lobe , temporal and occipital lobe
Define ventral and dorsal direction
Ventral = towards FRONT of body / BOTTOM of head
Dorsal = towards BACK of body / TOP of head
Define Anterior and Posterior direction
Anterior = nose end
Posterior = tail end
Define lateral and medial directions
Lateral = towards sides
Medial = towards middle
Define bilateral , ipsilateral , and contralateral directions
Bilateral = Both sides of head/body
Ipsilateral = Same side of head/body
Contralateral = Opposite side of head/body
Features of the hindbrain
Medulla oblongata (cardiac resp , resp , muscle tone)
The pons (bridge between midbrain and hindbrain)
Myelencephalon (Cerebellum , communicates to motor / sense organs , balance etc)
