Week 9 Flashcards
What is glycolyis?
A sequence of reactions connecting the partial degradation of glucose into pyruvate and the synthesis of ATP from Pi and ADP
Purpose of glycolysis
Generate ATP from free energy as rearrangement of glucose
Partial degradation of glucose, provide material for TCA cycle
Stage of glycolysis
Set-up (activating glucose as preparation for degradation, requires ATP)
Mid-phase (Hexose degraded into 2 triose, oxidized into carboxylate)
Pay-off (recovery of bound energy to form ATP)
Use of pyruvate (anaerobe)
Fermentation
Reduced by NADH to become lactate
Use of pyruvate (aerobe)
Enters krebs cycle (TCA cycle)
NADH formed enters electron transport chain to produce ATP
Stages of glycolisis regulation
Hexokinase
Phosphofructokinase
Pyruvate kinase
What is gluconeogenesis
Synthesis glucose from pyruvate
3 pathway, high energy conversion is by passed
