- lateral flattening body shape
- Wings are absent with the hind legs specialized for jumping.
- have piercing-sucking mouthparts and spines on the body projecting backward.
- posses simple eyes with a single biconvex lens

Feeding behaviour
A
- Both sexes take blood meals and can be vectors.
- Female take blood meal then begin to lay eggs
- can survive several months without feeding

- can be as short as 16 days
