What are fillers?
materials injected under the skin to reduce the appearance of facial wrinkles, lines, folds and indented scars.
Injectable fillers can also be used to enhance facial contours by adding volume to lips or cheeks
What is an alternate site injury?
The current exited the patient’s body through an electrocardiograph lead, concentrating the current and resulting in a burn
How do you safely use a diathermy pad?
Follow manufacturer’s written instructions
Well vascularised muscle mass
Convex area
Close to surgical site
What sites do you avoid placing the diathermy pad on?
Prostheses
Bony prominences
Scar tissue
Hair
How do you prepare the electrode site?
Follow manufacturer’s instructions for hair removal, cleaning, and drying site
Protect return electrode from fluid invasion
Do not use flammable agents for PRE site preparation
Do not overlap edges of return electrode
Select appropriate size

Do not cut or modify

Do not warm return Pads
Apply after patient positioning
Place return electrode Pad proximal to tourniquet, preferably on operative side
When should a second diathermy pad be placed on the patient?
Obese

How do you safely handle an active electrode?
Active electrode MUST be in a non-conductive holster when not in use
Electrode that does not fit holster should be placed in a designated site with tip away from flammable material
Active electrode tips should be securely seated into the hand piece
Remove or cover jewelly
How do you avoid haemostat burns?
Use lowest power setting Activate low voltage (cut) Avoid touching patient Hold hemostat with full grip Avoid metal to metal arcing
