Superficial/Floating
- located deep next to the bone
- can’t be felt with light touch or moderate force
Deep
- 40-60 bpm
- less than 3 times per breath
- regular rhythm
Slow
- 90-140 bpm
- 5 beats/breath
Fast/ Rapid
- felt in all 3 positions at all 3 levels
- long, large, and forceful
- feeling of fullness
Excess
- pulse size is wide, but without strength
- forcless and slack in tension
- forceslles in all 3 positions
Deficient
-vessel is wide
Large/Big
- width is very thin
- feels like fine thread
Thready/ Small/ Thin
- pulse extends into other positions (cun, guan, chi)
- smooth and straight
Long/ Overflowing
- pulse can’t be felt in all there positions
- pulse absent in cun and or chi position
Short
- pulse moves quickly, smoothly, and slippery
- like pearl rolling on plate
Rolling/Slippery
- slow and waves not smooth
- irregular rhythm
- irregular strength and fullness
Hesitant/Choppy
-rapid with irregular pauses
Abrupt/Running
-slow with irregular missed beats
Knotted
- slow and weak
- pauses are regular intervals
Intermittent
- superficial, thin
- hits finger without strength
Soft/Soggy
- deep and thin
- hits finger without force
Weak
- feels taut, long, and forceful
- maintains straight line under fingers
Wiry/String-taut
- like wiry but more intense
- pulse rises and falls with strength and vibrates
Tense/Tight
- wide and forceful, but fades gently
- like ocean eave
Surging
- wide and slack when touched
- hollow on inside
Hollow
- large (thick and wide), superficial, string-like
- taut when touched lightly but hollow when pressing deeply
Leather
- wide, superficial, weak, and loose
- indistinct and unclear
Scattered
- pulse not felt when touching, seeking, or pressing
- only felt pressing to bone
Hidden
- deep, taught, long, wide, fixed, and forceful
- deep location
Firm
- vessel extremely thin and forceless
- pulse felt and then not felt
- when pressing deeply becomes vague
Minute/Faint
-leisurely, slowed down
Moderate
- rapid and slippery
- forceful in Guan position
- bean bouncing in vessel
Moving/Bouncing
- 140-180 BPM
- extremely rapid
- regular rhythm
