Week 8 - Memory Systems Flashcards
What sub memory systems are included in sensory memory?
Iconic = visual memory
Echoic = auditory memory
What sub systems are included in short-term memory or WM?
~ Central executive (overarching, coordinates info)
~ Visuospatial sketchpad ( stores and processes information in a visual or spatial form. The visuospatial sketchpad is used for navigation.)
~ Phonological loop (The phonological loop is a component of working memory model that deals with spoken and written material)
~ Episodic buffer (limited capacity storage system responsible for integrating information from several sources to create a unified memory,
What two sub-memory systems are in LTM?
Declarative = explicit memory
Non-declarative = implicit memory
What is the primacy VS recency effect?
Ability to remember words at the start vs end of a sequence.
What area of the brain is critical for LTM?
Medial temporal lobe. Important for LTM storage.
Patients with damage in this area could do STM fine, but not LTM.
What does the visuospatial sketchpad do?
Subsystem in WM/ STM that manages visual info
What is the phonological loop??
Manages speech perception processing in STM
What is the episodic buffer?
Integrates several information. It is temporary storage for memory.
E.g. 8 plus 2, then 10 plus 1. Keeping info to remember next calculation.
What is incorporated in declarative memory?
Episodic memory (events)
Semantic memory (facts)
What is involved in the encoding stage of LTM?
The way info is processed effects how well it is encoded in LTM (depth). Information processed in a deeper and more meaningful manner, will be better encoded.
In a task where there are word pairs, results found that synonyms were better recognised than rhyming words, because the meaning was processed.
Semantic network vs unrelated words.
