Week 8 Lecture - Intro to MMT Flashcards
What are the 3 reasons we assess muscle strength?
- Posture
- Gait
- ROM
What are the 3 various testing procedures used?
- Break test
- Concentric test
- Eccentric test
What are the differences between break, concentric, and eccentric testing?
- Break test involves putting the joint in midrange and having them hold
- Concentric involves putting the muscle at full length and having them hold
- Eccentric involves putting the muscle at a shortened length and having them hold
A greater span of function loss occurs when differentiating between grade _ and _ than between grade _ and _.
- 3 and 5
- 3 and 1
Grip strength is directly related to what?
Mortality risk
What are some subjective issues we may see when performing muscle tests?
- Different strengths of therapists
- Bias (pushing less for weaker patients and calling it the same)
What are the application basics of MMT?
- End range assessment (available range)
- Resistance
- Apply resistance at distal end where muscle attaches
- Apply resistance opposite line of pull
What are the exceptions to the application basics?
- Scapular muscles - preferred placement of lever arm is through the arm
- Triceps surae - testing most reliable having patient perform unilateral heel raises
- Hip abductors - test with a longer lever arm (ankle) due to strength of muscles
A grade 5 of hip abductors can only occur when the lever arm is at the ______.
ankle
What are the 5 diagnostic criteria for frality?
- Unintentional weight loss
- General feeling of exhaustion on 3 or more days/week
- Weakness (grip srength)
- Slow walking speed
- Low levels of physical activity
