What is a stable pelvis #?

A

often only 1 break in the pelvic ring
broken ends of bones line up adequately
low energy #’s are often stable

What is an unstable pelvis?

A

usually 2 or more breaks in the pelvic ring
broken bones do not line correctly (displacement)
high energy events cause these #’s

Hip #’s s/s?

A

Severe hip/groin pain
Inability to put weight on it/ walk on it
Bruising, swelling, inability to move/lift/rotate leg
Shorter leg on injured site / externally rotated
Palpation will be PAINFUL !!

A

Requires surgery to FIX

Types of Femur #’s:

A

Femoral mid-shaft fracture: abreak in the middle of the bone or narrow part of the femur

Suprecondylar fracture: a break just ABOVE the knee joint

Proximal fracture: a break in the uppermost part of the thigh bone next to hip joint

Treatment of femur #’s

A

immobilizing with a SAGER splint (if ISOLATED mid shaft #)
pain meds
stop massive hemorrhage
treat for SHOCK
