Week 5- Spinal Motion Restriction and Immobilzation Flashcards
Goal of spinal boards:
remove the pt from these devices as soon as it’s safe
What nerves are involved in respiration??
phrenic and vagus nerve
Phrenic Nerve
controls the diaphragm
pulls the lungs down to draw air in the body
exits spinal cord at C3-C5
Vagus Nerve
controls the parasympathetic nervous system
Where does the phrenic nerve exit the spinal cord?
C3 - C5
What equipment options do we have for SMR?
Cervical collar
Spinal board- Quick connect
Breakaway stretcher- scoop
Extrication device- KED
How to measure C collar?
jaw to trapezius
When to use a fracture board?
With C collar of course
Stabilizes torso/legs/pelvis
Primary use is for extrication of pt to a stretcher
Goal= remove pt from board onto stretcher ASAP
Used for RAPID EX, multi system trauma, immobilization
Most common
When to use scoop stretcher?
Pelvic #
SMR
Multisystem trauma
NO need to log roll them
When to use the KED?
Can’t lie flat (asthma, dyspnea, kyphosis)
CONCIOUS/STABLE
NOT for load + go pt
Great for tough extrication
Why do we take helmets off?
Airway management
Secure C spine
Apply collar
Head assessment
