WEEK 7 QUIZ Flashcards
List the steps to basic pinning procedures
pin left to right and fold to selvages
pin grainline arrow or fold first, then corners, then edges
use fabric sparingly and pin every 4-5 inches
make sure grainline arrows are in line with selvage and meaure both ends to make sure they’re equal
Define notches
a symbol that is square to the seams and used to indicate darts, seams, zipper lengths, pocket positions, style lines, etc..
Define swatch
small piece of fabric attached to design sketch that represents the fabric to be used
Define seams
cut parts of a pattern that are sewn together
seam allowances must be drawn evenly and follow the shape of pattern
define muslin
plain woven cotton made from bleached or unbleached yarns in a variety of weights:
Coarse weave- used for draping/testing
light weave- used for softly draped garment
heavyweight- firmly woven, used for testing tailored garments, jackets, and coats
Define grainline
arrows always run parallel to the selvage
arrows that correspond to the weave of the fabric, there are two types:
Length grain- parallel to the selvage and perpendicular to the floor
Cross-grain- perpendicular to the selvage and parallel to the floor
Define selvage
the narrow, firmly woven, finished strip on the edge of a fabric
Study page 26, identify fabric width, selvage edges and length of fabric used
Study page 26, identify fabric width, selvage edges and length of fabric used
What seams start by joining right sides together
plain seam (open and closed)
What seams start by joining wrong sides together
french seam
flat-felled
Plain seam open
used on lined garments where there will be minimum fraying due to handling
reduces bulk and makes seam almost invisible
Plain seam closed and searged
used for unlined garments (along crotch or armpit)
searging eliminates fraying
used on medium to lightweight fabrics
french seam
used on sheer lightweight fabrics
seam is bulky, not used on heavy garments
only used on straight seams
flat-felled seam
(JEAN SEAM)
bulky seam used on straight edges
very strong and durable
clean-finished hem
edge finish, not used as a structural seam
finishes raw edges and provides a neat finish
mostly used on cotton
