Week 7 Psychoanalytic & Neoanalytic Perspectives Flashcards
Conscious
The level of awareness containing thoughts and feelings we are directly aware of.
Preconscious
The level of awareness containing memories and thoughts not currently in conscious awareness but easily retrievable.
Unconscious
The largest and most influential level of awareness, holding repressed desires, memories, and experiences inaccessible to conscious awareness.
Id
Devil on ur shoulder (The primitive, instinctual component of personality operating on the pleasure principle, seeking immediate gratification.)
Ego
The rational component of personality operating on the reality principle, mediating between id impulses and superego demands.
Superego
Angel on ur shoulder (The moral component of personality, embodying internalised societal and parental values, leading to feelings of guilt and anxiety if violated.)
Defense Mechanisms
Unconscious strategies employed by the ego to reduce anxiety arising from conflict between the id, ego, and superego.
Psychosexual Stages
Five developmental stages (oral, anal, phallic, latency, genital) proposed by Freud, each with specific conflicts and potential for fixation.
Fixation
Getting “stuck” at a psychosexual stage due to unresolved conflicts, potentially influencing adult personality traits.
Psychoanalysis
A therapeutic approach aimed at uncovering unconscious material through techniques like free association, dream interpretation, and analysis of transference.
Collective Unconscious
Jung’s concept of a shared, inherited reservoir of universal experiences, archetypes, and symbols common to all humanity.
Archetypes
Universal, symbolic images residing in the collective unconscious, representing fundamental human experiences and motifs.
Striving for Superiority
Adler’s core motivational principle, driving individuals to overcome feelings of inferiority and achieve personal growth and competence.
Inferiority Complex
Exaggerated feelings of inadequacy and incompetence, potentially stemming from childhood experiences, influencing behaviour and self-esteem.
Basic Anxiety
Horney’s concept of pervasive anxiety stemming from childhood experiences of helplessness and isolation in a potentially hostile world.
