Why is code of conduct necessary?
To safeguard the
1- Welfare of those who use psychological services
2- The integrity of the profession
Who runs the code of conduct in Aus?
Australian Psychological Society Code of ethics- guidelines. Further enhanced by guidelines for psychological assessment and the use of psychological tests.
What are the three general ethical principles?
Respect for the rights and dignity of people and peoples, propriety , integrity
What is the respect for the rights and dignity of people and peoples?
Psychologists regard people as intrinsically valuable and respect their rights, including rights to autonomy and justice
What are the ethical standards in respect?
Justice, Respect, Informed Consent, Privacy, Confidentiality, Release of information to clients, collection of client information from associated parties
What is justice?
Discrimination and bias in psychological testing. How it can affect testing.
e.g. test languages, is it appropriate for us to translate on the spot? Is the normative sample influenced?
What is informed consent?
Psychologists must explain clearly to their client
- the purpose of the psychological assessment
- what is involved in the assessment process
- to whom any client information will be disclosed, particularly the distribution of any reports and
- how reports will be stored and the duration of storage.
What is confidentiality?
- Information is used only for the purposes for which it was first collected, and for which consent was obtained from the client being assessed.
What is propriety?
Psychologists ensure that they are competent to deliver the psychological services they provide- put the client first.
What are the two important ethical standards of proprietary?
Competence and psychological assessment
What is competence?
Maintaining your ability as a psycholigist. Only do testing when it is relevant. Clarifying whether previous assessment data exist, and if so, whether the existing assessment data can be considered current, choosing appropriate procedures, accurately scoring and intepreting results
What is the psychological assessment standards?
6 components
- relevant scientific procedures
- specify purposes and uses of assessment and indicate limits
- choose, administer and interpret assessment procedures appropriately
- use valid procedures and research findings when scoring
- report assessment results appropriately and accurately in language tat could be understoof
- do not compromise the effective use of assessment methods or techniques, nor render them open to misuse by publishing or otherwise disclosing their contentnts to persons unauthorised.
What is integrity?
Psychologists recognise that their knowledge of the discipline of psych, their professional standing and the information they gather place them in a position of power and trust.
