what is deviance?
when someone departs from a norm and evokes a negative reaction from others.
what is a crime?
deviance that breaks a law.
what is a law?
a norm enforced by government bodies.
informal punishment vs formal punishment
informal: raised eyebrows, judgement, gossip.
formal: punishment from the judicial system
social control
the ways that society attempts to regulate people’s thoughts, feelings, appearance, and behaviors.
internal vs external social control
internal: regulates people through socialization
external: regulates people through punishments and rewards.

interested in how power rules, and how social abnormalities were created to define normality.
said that spaces could be designed to maintain social control (panopticon)

All-seeing prison design.
1 guard tower and prisoners and guards can all see eachother.

devience results from the response of others rather than the deviant acts

we tend to become what we are seen as by others
