Week 7: Core Components to Spatial Analysis Flashcards
What are the two parts MAUP is composed of?
- Scale effect
- Zoning effect
What is the scale effect?
Statistical analyses based on data aggregated over areas of different sizes will produce different results.
What is the zoning effect?
Two sets of zones can have the same or similar areas but very different forms & analyses based on two sets of zones may vary.
What is distance decay?
A way of weighting the importance of distance over the given phenomenon.
What is spatial autocorrelation?
Correlation among observations of a single variable strictly attributable to the proximity of those observations in geographical space.
Why are spatial patterns important?
Reveal relationships
What is location quotient?
A simple measure to indicate the relative share of a phenomena in a particular place.
Give an advantage of location quotient.
Good visual aid
Give a disadvantage of location quotient.
Does not quantitatively determine presence / absence of spatial pattern.
How does binary connectivity work?
If areas are adjacent to one another, they get assigned as 1, e.g. w(ij) = 1. If they are not next to one another, they get assigned as 0, e.g. w(ij)=0.
What is the best measure of spatial autocorrelation?
Moran’s I
