week 7 Flashcards

1
Q

what do universal shift registers do

A

enable ‘parallel to serial’ and ‘serial to parallel’ conversion of data. Without
these devices serial communication would be impossible to achieve

Q

what is needed to load the universal shift registers

A

Four clock pulses are needed to serially load the
register, but only one clock pulse is required to
parallel load in a new 4-bit word.

Q

how does a cross-coupled NAND gate work

A

If the output Q of the top NAND gate is low then both its inputs must be high. Since the low
output of the top NAND gate is connected to an input in the bottom NAND gate the output Q
must be high irrespective of the logic level on input line B.

Q

how does a mechanical switch work in a circuit

A

When the contacts of a mechanical switch are closed they bounce open and closed many
times before remaining in the desired position. This sends a stream of square waves from
the output of the switch for a few milliseconds
