Week 7 Flashcards
What is a computer network?
Group of devices that are connected offer certain services
What are End Devices (Hosts)?
Source of destination of a message
Client or server or both
Have unique physical and logical address
What are Intermediary (Network) Devices?
Connect host to the network and connect networks together
Permit or deny the flow of data
What are Peripherals?
Don’t have logical address
Rely on their connected host to perform all network operations
What are the 3 types of network cables?
Metallic “Copper” Wires - electrical pulses
Fibre-optic Cable - electrical pulses
Wireless - Electromagnetic waves
What are the 2 Network Types?
LAN
WAN
What is a Local-Area Network (LAN)?
Spans single geographical area
single organisation
high data speeds
may be single local network or interconnected local networks
What is a Wide-area Network (WAN)?
Groups of LANs interconnected within large area
TSP interconnects these geographical spanned networks
slow data speeds
What is The Internet?
Global mesh of interconnected networks
What are Communication Protocols?
Computers use protocols to communicate just like humans
What is a Protocol Stack (Suite)?
Group of interrelated protocols that are necessary to perform a communication function
What is a Protocol Data Unit (PDU)?
Generic term for data at each layer
What is a Segmentation?
Process of breaking data into pieces
What is Encapsulation?
Process of adding control info to the data at each layer
What is the Application Layer?
Human Interface to the Network
