Week 7 Flashcards
Where is your heart?
- Inferior mediastinum medial cavity of thorax
- Rests on the diaphragm
- Apex points to left hip.
How big is your heart.
- Size of your fist.
What does your heart do?
Pumps blood to
1. Lungs for oxygenation (O2) + CO2 loss (RV)
2. Body for transportation of gases, wastes, electrolytes, nutrients, hormones ect. (LV)
Why does not heart need its own blood supply when there is blood passing through it?
Cannot receive O2 and glucose from blood passing through its chambers.
Term - Aorta
Blood moves OUT of the left ventricle into this structure.
Term - Pulmonary trunk
Blood leaves the right ventricles and flows INTO this structure.
Term - Tricspid Valve
Blood from the right atrium flows THROUGH this structure.
Term - Right atrium
Location of the heart’s pacemaker (SA node).
Term - Left atrium
Blood moves INTO this structure once fully oxygenated by lungs.
Term - Mitral valve
Blood from the left atrium flows THROUGH this structure.
Name the two components of the cardiac output?
Heart rate (HR) x Stroke volume (SV)
What are some things that can influence stroke volume and heart rate?
- Heart rate – temperature, nerves, hormones, medications.
- Stroke volume – venous return volume, filling time contractility of myocardium.
