What happened when Mt. Vesuvius erupted in 79 CE?
Pyroclastic Flows - superheated clouds of ash and fumes, rush down mountain and carbonization of wood
What were Lupinar?
Brothels with high influx of traders and sailors,
directions to brothel on ground of phallacies.
Paintings act as a menu/where you put your stuff down.
What were tintinnabulum?
Apotropaic (send away) device, hung over doorway with bells to send evil away.
Priapus - well endowed, wealth, luck, fortune.
What was the sister city of Pompeii?
Herculaneum
What was the Villa of Papyri?
Villa suburbana (outside city walls), extensive library (papyri scrolls).
Describe Ostia (Antica).
Mouth of Tiber, mimics level of preservation of Pompeii (with no volcano), foreport.
What are Tesserae?
Tiny stones to make mosaics and whether a lot of wear.
