key DSM-5 diagnostic criteria for Major Depressive Disorder (MDD)

  1. At least a 2 week history of 5 or more of these symptoms:
    - Depressed mood most of the day, nearly every day**
    - Markedly diminished interest/pleasure in activities most of the day, nearly every day**
    - Significant weight loss or weight gain/decreased appetite
    - Difficulty sleeping (insomnia or hypersomnia)
    - Psychomotor agitation or retardation
    - Fatigue/loss of energy *moving slowly
    - Feelings of worthlessness or inappropriate guilt *feel a lot of regret for no reason
    - Inability to concentrate or indecisiveness
    - Recurrent thoughts of death/suicide

at least 1 of either ** [depressed mood or loss of interest/pleasure] MUST BE PRESENT

  1. Symptoms represent a change from baseline
  2. Symptoms cause significant distress/impairment in functioning

- anhedonia: loss of ability to experience pleasure, happiness, enjoyment
- social isolation

less common complaints:

- weight gain
