Week 7 Flashcards
What is adduction?
lateral movement of a body part toward the midline of the body
example: moving a person’s arm from outstretched to a position alongside the body
What is abduction?
lateral movement of a body part away from the midline of the body
example: an arm is abducted when it is moved away from the body
What is flexion?
the state of being bent
What is hyperextension?
example: a person’s cervical spine is hyperextended when looking overhead, toward the ceiling
What is dorsiflexion?
backward bending of the hand or foot
example: pointing the toes toward the knee
What is inversion?
movement of the sole of the foot inward
Eversion
movement of the sole of the foot outward
what is isotonic movement?
muscle shortening and active movement
example: jogging
what is isometric movement?
muscle contraction without shortening
what is isokinetic movement?
muscle contraction with resistance
How to assess mobility?
-general ease of movement and gait
-alignment
-joint structure and function
-muscle mass, tone, and strength
-endurance
What is fowler’s position used for?
-promotes lung expansion
-back/kidney pain
What is supine position used for?
examination
What is lateral/side-lying position used for?
-promotes spinal alignment
-reduces pressure on sacrum, heels, scapulae
What is the sims position used for?
rectal temp
What is the prone position used for?
allows for full extension of hip and knee joints to prevent contractures
promotes drainage of secretions
What is lateral semi-prone recumbent used for?
reduces pressure on sacrum and hips
promotes drainage of secretions
What is Trendelenburg used for?
promotes venous return
promotes drainage of the lower lobes of the lungs
What is the oblique position used for?
alternative to side-lying position
puts less pressure on the trochanter region
