An interface metaphor is a set of user interface visuals, actions and procedures that exploit specific knowledge that users already have of other domains.
What is the purpose of an Interface Metaphor?
The purpose of the interface metaphor is to give the user instantaneous knowledge about how to interact with the user interface.
What does “GUI” stand for?
Graphical User Interface
What was the main benefit that ‘GUIs’ offered in comparison to Command Languages?
Direct Manipulation (DM) - Objects, usually graphical objects on a screen - are directly manipulated with a pointing device instead of the typed commands.

slider, status or progress bar.
