Week 6 - Medication management actions Flashcards
what is Pharmacotherapeutics?
Therapeutic uses and
effects of drugs
Types of actions:
– Restorative
– Chemotherapeutic
– Supportive
– Palliative
what is Pharmacodynamics?
Study of the biochemical and physiological effects of drugs and the mechanisms of their action in the body
- changes cells physiology by interacting with specific molecules + chemicals normally found in body
What are the effects of Pharmacological?
Agonist: drug produces same response as body
Antagonist: drug that prevents body’s natural response
What are the different pharmacokinetics?
- Absorption - Drug entering
bloodstream - Distribution- Transport of drug
from site of absorption
to site of action - Metabolism-
Drug converted to less active
form - Excretion
Drug and
metabolites leaving the
body
what are the Therapeutic classes
Medications classified according to pathology they intend to treat
1st Level – main anatomical group
– 2nd Level – therapeutic sub group
– 3rd Level – pharmacological sub group
– 4th Level – chemical sub
group
– 5th Level – chemical
substance
Example of therapeutic class:
Stool softeners/ lubricants
* Increase water retention by coating stool surface with a
water immiscible layer for lubricant effect
