Week 5 medication management Flashcards
what are ways to administer parenteral medication and why use this route?
Subcutaneous
Intramuscular
why:
* Faster acting
* Oral route unavailable
* Specific drugs
what are 2 Disadvantages to parenteral route?
- Adverse reactions more rapid
- Pain and discomfort to patient
- Risk of infection
- Risk to health personnel
- Nerve and bone damage
What is a key part and what is a key site
Key sites: portal of entry for microorganisms to colonise the
patient.
Key parts:
Any parts of the equipment which come into contact with procedural equipment or the patient.
what are intramuscular sites?
o Ventrogluteal
o Vastus lateralus
o Deltoid
o Dorsogluteal
How to locate the deltoid site
Fully expose the upper arm and shoulder; ask patient to relax by bending at elbow
Locate the acromion process
Position fingers: the top one on the acromion process the bottom 3-5
cm down
The lower 4 fingers forms the upper border of injection site
Draw an imaginary line from axilla across the upper arm. This line is the lower border of injection site.
imagine upside down triangle between these 2 borders.
Injection site within triangle.
How do you locate the Vastus lateralus site
Divide the area between the greater
trochanter and lateral
femoral condyle into thirds
Identify the middle third
Injection given on
anterolateral aspect of thigh
Why is this site not used: Dorsogluteal
o Thick gluteal muscles of the buttocks
o Not recommended due to risk of striking the sciatic nerve, major blood vessels or bone
o Not suitable for older patients, emaciated, very obese
patients
How do you locate the ventrogluteal site
Heel of hand on the greater
trochanter
Thumb pointing toward groin
Point index finger to
anterior superior iliac spine
Middle finger toward
iliac crest
Area between two fingers,
about knuckle length, is the
injection site
