How is intelligence normally assessed?
Typically assessed to give one overall score predicting educational attainment and job performance
What are the two models of emotional intelligence?
Ability model: Uses an objective test to give an overall score
Trait model: Uses self-report questionnaires to give scores on different aspects of emotion related self perceptions and tendencies
How is EI related to job performance?
IQ and big 5 explain 42% variance in performance
MSCEIT scores (ability) predict teamwork
How is EI related to ability testing in jobs?
75% of companies use psychometric tests in the application process
Tests are used to highlight what people need more training and coaching
What are some issues associated with occupational ability testing in the workplace?
Not all tests are validated in the same way and may over rely on knowledge the participant already has
Different skills need different roles
Some tests might disadvantage certain groups
Second generation tests are more fair and valid but not used by employers yet
How is IQ testing used in schools?
Enterence exams

What are some of the issues with using IQ testing in schools?
Cause and effect with IQ and attainment
Anxiety plays a part
Practice effects
IQ tests attatch a stigma to children with learning disabilities
How can EI be applied to schools to help develop children?
Social and emotional learning is incorporated into the curriculum
SEL increases emotional intelligence, social behaviour and academic achievement
But it’s not always implemented effectively
