Q

Describe the two types of forces

A

Internal forces- sum to zero and can’t accelerate body (muscles and ligaments)
External forces - dont have to sum to zero and can accelerate body (contact between two bodies)

Q

Describe the factors that affect friction

A

Surface area - friction doesn’t depend on surface area

Contact surface - softer, rougher surfaces have greater friction and harder, smoother surfaces have less friction

Q

What is the coefficient of restitution

A

measure of how elastic a collision is (or how much energy is returned). In perfect elastic collisions the coefficient of restitution is 1. In perfect inelastic collisions the coefficient is 0.

16
Q

What is mechanical energy?

A

Mechanical energy can change (requires the use of another source of energy) and is a scalar.

17
Q

What are the three different forms of mechanical energy?

A

kinetic, gravitational potential and elastic

18
Q

What is kinetic energy?

A

Describes the energy due to motion

19
Q

What is work?

A

Work is a scalar defined by force x displacement.

20
Q

Is energy and momentum vectors or scalar?

A

Energy is a scalar and momentum is a vector

21
Q

How is kinetic energy determined?

A

Determined by distance over force applied

22
Q

How is momentum determined?

A

Determined by time over force applied.

23
Q

What is positive work?

A

Energy transferred from system to surroundings. Concentric contractions human motion and where force and displacement is in same direction

24
Q

What is negative work?

A

Energy transferred from surroundings to systems. Eccentric contraction human motion and where force and displacement is in opposite directions

25
Q

When is maximal power obtained?

A

Obtained at intermediate velocities where muscle force is less than max

26
Q

How is power calculated?

A

Power is the rate at which work is done.
