What is the enlightenment?
An early modern cultural movement characterized by the belief that human reason could produce a perfectly orderly world, with full dominion over nature and an ideal social structure
What is romanticism
A post-revolutionary cultural movement that was ambivalent about the power of reason, and that saw nature and human emotions as never fully governable, but also as sources of individual authenticity and truth.
Vitalism
The idea that living things are fundamentally unlike non-living things due to some sort of life force or vital energy that organisms have, but plain inert matter does not.
It isn’t a soul.
Animal spirits
An idea about what the vital essence was - often conceived of as a fine fluid that flowed thru animal tissues, infusing them with life and conveying the powers of sensation and motion
Animism
The idea that the body was essentially inert matter, like any other matter, except it was animated by a soul or spirit
Materialism
Aka the mechanistic world view - the idea that no special forces, substances or spirits are needed to explain living things beyond those also used to describe non living matter
Irritable
Tissue that responds to a stimulu
Animal electricity
The force activating the muscles in Luigi Galvani’s frog leg preparations and other experimental models
