Week 5 (Through Cancer Terms) Flashcards
Carcinoma
Most common form of cancer that develops from sheets of cells that cover a surface (skin) or line a body cavity (lining of stomach).
Sarcoma
Rare form of cancer that arises from connective and supportive tissues like bone, muscle, fat, etc.
T, N, M
T: indicates size of tumor (followed by a number indicating its size in mm), N: indicates if cancer has spread to lymph nodes, M: whether cancer has metastasized to other organs and areas
Radiosensitive
Cancer degenerates in response to radiation
Radioresistance
Either a partial response or no response at all to radiation
Fractionation
Treatment where radiation dose is broken down into multiple exposures over several weeks to minimize side effects
Cryosurgery
Destroying malignant tissue by freezing it with a cold probe, used for soft tissues like liver or kidneys
Fulguration
“Lightning” in Latin. Malignant tissue is destroyed with an electrocautery instrument (electrical current).
Excisional Biopsy
Simultaneous tissue sampling and removal of a tumor with a safe margin of normal tissue, usually done with skin lesions
Resect
To cut and remove a segment of an organ containing a tumor
En Bloc Resection
Removal of the tumor and any surrounding organs or tissues that may be cancerous, necessary for large abdominal sarcomas
