WEEK 5: Resources Flashcards
Not capable of replacement or renewable once utilized or extracted
NON-RENEWABLE RESOURCES
Stock resources that are dormant and if left alone, no economic benefit could be derived from these
MINERAL RESOURCES
Naturally occuring concentration of a free element or compound in solid form
MINERAL DEPOSIT
Fossil fuel, petroleum, coal - carbon in solid form
ENERGY RESOURCES
In this year coal was replaced by oil and natural gas because they are environmentally clean an are easier and cheaper to transport. They can also be refined to produce liquid fuels for vehicles.
1910
Association of different countries in the middle east that supply petroleum products all over the world. These countries have control in the supply and price of oil in the world market
OPEC (ORGANIZATION OF PETROLEUM EXPORTING COUNTRIES)
Perpetual energy resources like hot springs
GEOTHERMAL RESOURCES
Splitting of the nucleus of an atom
NUCLEAR FISSION
Combination of nuclei to form a single nucleus (this both produce tremendous amount of energy)
NUCLEAR FUSION
Massive leak that caused explosions and fire; caused the immediate death of more than 30 people
CHERNOBYL NUCLEAR POWER PLANT IN RUSSIA (1986)
Is radiant light and heat from the sun that is harnessed using a range of ever-evolving technologies such as solar heating, photovoltaic, solar thermal energy, solar architecture, molten salt power plants and artificial photosynthesis
SOLAR ENERGY
Is electrical energy produced through the power of moving water
HYDRO POWER
Ocean water stores a large amount of heat from the sun and energy is tapped by giant floating ocean thermal energy conversion power plants
ENERGY FROM HEAT STORED IN WATER
Wind energy describes the process which wind is used to generate electricity
ENERGY FROM WIND
This is produced through photosynthesis; organic plant matter that can be burned directly as a solid fuel
BIOMASS
