What is the BREAK test?
providing resistance at midpoint of ROM to assess the patient’s effort
(not your effort)
How to perform a BREAK test
(6 steps)
- take patient through PROM
- have patient move AROM
- bring extremity to midpoint in range
- ask patient to hold position
- apply pressure
- determine the grade felt
How to apply pressure during the BREAK test
in opposite direction of the mm action at the distal point of the extremity without crossing the next joint
apply enough pressure to break the patient’s hold
