Week 5: Motor Development Flashcards
What are infants FIRST reflexes movement ?
Patellar Reflex: knee jerk
Rooting Reflex: Newborn’s mouth moves towards brush on cheek
Grasp Reflex: Newborn’s grab on to anything in their hand (E.G finger in hand)
Stepping Reflex: Baby will walk when lowered on surface
Moro Reflex: Arms move to side when baby is unsupported
Motor Milestones * Different stages/ages*
1st: On stomach, can raise chest with arms ( 2-3 months)
*AKA as Tummy time
2nd: Roll Over (3 months)
3rd: Pulls self to stand (6 months)
4th: Walks along furniture (9.5 months)
5th: Stands unsupported (11.5 months)
6th: walks on own (12 months)
“Theories of motor development”
Maturational Account
Motor development depends on the DEVELOPMENT OF THE BRAIN’S MOTOR.
(E.G study (1929) on learning to climb stairs with twins. Found out that both were able to walk up the stairs, despite the study. It should that within a year (52 weeks) they were developmental ready.
Maturational Account Part 2
Motor deprivation doesn’t lead to motor impairment
- babies with less motor experience sill DEVELOP NORMALLY
(E.g Indians carrying babies on their backs)
- In some cause, ONLY extreme motor deprivation; (E.g having babies only in cribs)
Dynamic systems theory
Emphasizes that it is the interaction between the person, environment, and the task that changes how our movement.
- Brain system
- Body
- Perception
- Environment
The Mystery of the Disappearing Step Reflex
Newborns show a kicking reflex, while one-month-olds do not?
Maturation theory or dynamic System theory ?
dynamic System theory ?
Support for Dynamic Systems theory
The Step Reflex
- babies are born with a stepping reflex that disappears within weeks of birth.
One- month-old infants. ( who don’t have the step reflex will step in water
-babies still have the kick reflex
REVIEW:
How does walking emerge ?
REVIEW: is walking an extension of earlier reflexes ?
How does the emergence of walking relate to the emergence of other motor skills?
How do other factors ( E.g weight) influence the emergence of walking ?
