What is accessibility?
The degree to which an environment affords use of its resources with respect to an individual’s level of function
What is universal design?
The design of products and environments to be usable by all people, to the greatest extent possible, without the need for adaptation or specialized design.
Purpose of examination of the environment?
- Identify design barriers that compromise performance of tasks
- Determine patient’s safety and level of function in the environment
Purpose of intervention?
- Make recommendations for accommodations
- Determine need for adaptive equipment or assistive technology
- Prepare family and caregivers for patient’s return and recommend further services
Methods of examination of environment?
- Patient interview
- Self-report instruments
- Visual depictions
- On-site visit
