What is the appropriate dose for diphenhydramine?
25-50mg 30 minutes before bedtime
What is the appropriate dose for melatonin?
2-5mg two to three hours before bedtime for up to 8 weeks
What is the appropriate dose for caffeine?
100-200mg every three to four hours as needed
Common adverse effects of diphenhydramine
Daytime sedation, anticholinergic toxicity
Common adverse effects of melatonin
Headache, dizziness, nausea, drowsiness
Common adverse effects of valerian
Diarrhea, withdrawal effect if stopped abruptly
Common adverse effects of caffeine
Interferes with sleep, causes transient increase in heart rate and blood pressure, high doses may cause agitation
Contraindications of melatonin
Pregnancy, breast feeding mothers, women trying to get pregnant

Pregnancy and lactation (insufficient evidence)

Monoamine oxidase inhibitor use, coronary artery disease, uncontrolled hypertension, preexisting arrythmias
