Older adults continue to be sexually active. Men suffer with ED and women suffer from lack of lubrication but their clitoral function is the same. Struggles with achieving orgasm.

What is the research on cognitive decline and cognitive training?
For normal cognitive decline, mind games, exercise and diet can help reduce decline. Additionally, training to help improve certain areas have yielded improvements in older adults, indicating hope and neuroplasticity

a demeaning form of speech used to talk to elders as if they were children
two ways to reduce prevalence of elder abuse
- education on this problem
- respite care to help family care for others
What about substance use in elder populations?
Increase in substance use in elders, especially with alcohol and prescription drugs.
Depression in older adults
Depression is higher in those were are alone/ not married, divorced/ widowed. More so related with feeling old rather than actual age. Exacerbated by feelings of helplessness and hopelessness
How can depression be counteracted?
Focus on positives in life, happiness and resilience. Have an outlook for improvement rather than hopelessness due to ageing related factors
How to treat older adults respectfully
- no eldertalk, speak to them normally
- value their concerns and give full attention
- understand their view of the problem and their belief systems, educational background, culture
- presume confidence unless otherwise determined
- involve them in as much decision making as possible
ADA definition of disability
physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more of the major life activities. visual, hearing, orthopedic, leaning, speech, cognitive ,psychiatric.
Myths about disability
- most people use wheelchairs

- physical barriers are the greatest barriers to Ppl with D
- people with D are brave and courageous- no they are like everyone else
what are the 3 models of disability?
moral model- disability is caused by moral lapse or sin
medical model- disability is a defect or loss of function that resides in the individual. Medical intervention is taken.
Minority model views disability as an external problem which involves an environment that is filled with negative social attitudes and poor physical accommodations.
