what is intersectionality
intersectionality is the concept of having multiple identities that cross paths with one another in a single individual. this creates a unique experience of oppression for many people
3 forms of microaggressions
microassault, microinsult, and microinvalidation
microassault
intentional and aggressive action or verbal act that expresses directly racist/ bigotted views
microinsult
this is an indirect phrase or behavior that conveys prejudice and discrimination. not always intentional, and person may not be aware of this.
microinvalidation
occurrence where someone questions or tries to find alternative explanations to explain an encounter that was prejudice in nature. Negate feelings and experiences of other.
what are the impacts of microaggresions?
long term psychological and physical impacts on people, possible development of PTSD, avoidance of treatment and poor therapeutic alliance
What is institutional betrayal?
institutional betrayal is when institutions uphold prejudice and discriminatory policies, ignore such occurrences, or don’t condone such behaviors in a proper manner.
What are some situations a counselor or color may experience when working with a white client?
- being challenged for their competency

3.transferring racial anger towards client - viewing counselor of color as “supreme minority”
- Dealing with client’s expressions of racism
Wat are some situations a counselor of color may experience when working with a POC?
- overidentify with the client
- encounter clashes in culture
- experience clashes in communication and counseling styles
- receiving and expressing racial animosity
- dealing with the racial identity status of the client or counselor
What does it mean to have a clash of sociodemographic realities?
the realities for individuals in marginalized positions differ greatly from the dominant group due to their experience, therefore there is a clash in reality and how truth and the world is seen
What is race
Sociopolitical construct that is based on phenotype, how people look, social and culture similarities of people.
What is ethnicity
The shared heritage, lineage, nationality. Shared cultural practices and experiences
Define racism
Attitude behavior, policy, or institutional structure that subordinates a person based on their race
What is the difference between intersectionality versus multiple identities ?
Intersectionality is not about holding an identity but rather it is about how various identities may intersect and create a unique experience of oppression. Multiple identities do not speak to the unique experiences that these identities form.
