What is culture?
the social environment within which we are raise and are socialized during our lifetime; includes objects, ideas, customs, behaviors, and practices
what do politicians mean when they refer to “old stock” Canadians?
meaning white settlers from Britain and France.
what does the term “old stock Canadians” create a sense of?
“us VS. them”, meaning immigrants, indig people, non-white people
what does culture refer to?
a set of values and practices that shape how we live our life
what are values?
ideas and judgments about what is important and meaningful
what are practices?
concrete things that we do that often reflect our values
how can sociologists view culture?
as a toolkit of habits, skills and styles
what is material culture?
all physical items that people have created that are imbued with social meanings in a given culture, e.g. food, art, tools, clothing, buildings, etc.
what is non-material culture?
ideas and behaviours associated with a given culture, e.g. values, beliefs, language, knowledge, symbols, etc.
what did Durkheim write about culture?
wrote about both material and non-material culture
nonmaterial as in religion and material manifestations of religion in totems
what is culture shock?
the feeling of disorientation experienced by someone who is suddenly subjected to an unfamiliar culture, way of life, or set of attitudes.

calls to recognize Indigenous language rights.
