Week 5 Content Flashcards
How many parts do teeth have? + State them?
3 Parts: Crown/Neck/Root
Describe the characteristics of the Crown?
1: Visible Portion of the tooth above the neck
2: Covered in hard protective layer called enamel. (Protects the dentin and pulp chamber laying underneath)
Another name for the neck and its characteristics?
Another Name: Cementoenamel Junction or Cervical Line
Characteristics: Allows for attachment of gingiva to the tooth/ Represents the area where the enamel layer meets the cementum layer (visible line can be seen for extracted teeth).
Characteristics of the root?
1:The larger portion of the tooth extending from neck to apex is the portion that is covered by the gingiva.
2: The root is covered in a protective layer called cementum (covers the underlying dentin and pulp)
3: The root secures the tooth in a socket in the alveolar bone.
4: Some teeth can have from 1 to 3 or 4
What tissues are parts of the crown, neck and root made of?
Enamel
Cementum
Dentin
Pulp
Characteristics of Enamel
1:Has no living tissues (ex: Vessels, nerves or cells)
2: Enamel is comprised of dense arrangements of minerals like Hydroxyapatite is a major mineral ( forming prism shaped roots that run in wave patterns perpendicular to tooth surface and parallel in the neck area which is the hardest tissue in the human body)
3: The tissue can still be degraded and dissolved by acids produced by dental plaque that causes caries.
4: Acidic food can cause Enamel to soften.
Characteristics of Cementum?
1:Hardened bone like tissue
2: Formed by cells called cementoblasts
3: Has a lower mineral concentration that enamel and dentin which give it’s light yellow appearance (due to some living tissues)
4: Periodontal ligaments surround cementum (it attaches to the cementum and anchors it to the alveolar processes (bone) in the maxilla and mandible
5: Also included in the 4 tissues that make up the paeriodontium and the other 3 are: Gingivae/ Periodontal Ligament and alveolar Bone proper
