Week 5 Flashcards
Line
A mark made by moving a point across space. Line can be actual or implied, and vary in direction, thickness, and density
Outline
The edge of a shape or figure depicted by an actual line drawn or painted on the surface
Contour lines
percieved line that marks the border of an object in space
Contour
outermost limits of an object
implied line
created by movement and direction; fluidity of motion
Classical/Analytical line
mathematical, precise, and rationally organized lines
Qualities of a line
Characteristics of a line such as thickness, texture, fluidity to covey emotion and style
Hatching and Cross Hatching
Techniques using closely spaced parallel or intersecting line to create shading and texture
Autographic line
A unique, personal style of line that reflects an artists identity
Composition
Organization of elements in a group of art
Figure
Resting in the front of the ground; positive space
Ground
The flat plane that rests the figure; the negative space
Volume
Amount of space a form occupies
Mass
The quantity of the matter; weight
Overlap
Placing one figure behind another
Position Perspective
Establishing space in 2D by placing objects that are closer lower and objects further higher
Value, Tone, Key
The shift from light to dark characteristics of atmospheric perspective; chiaroscuro
Atmospheric Perspective
Objects further from the viewer get blurrier
Chiaroscuro:
The use of dark and light to create the effect of 3D modeled surfaces
Foreshortening
What is closer appears more significant than what is further
Oblique
The front face of an object is in true size and shape while other faces are projected at an angle
Axonometric
An object is tilted to show multiple faces but all axis’ remain parallel to the projection plane
Linear Perspective
- Things perceived as far away are smaller than things closer
- Parallel lines are represented as receding into the distance then converge into a vanishing point
One point linear perspective
A version of linear perspective where there is one vanishing point
Two point linear perspective
A version of linear perspective where there are two vanishing points
Vanishing point
the point on the horizon line where parallel lines converge
Vantage point
The point the viewer is positioned
