*in some “abuse” or corporal punishment cases, often psycho-ed and family counselling results in far better outcomes for the child that sending a SW storming in
What are the 8 steps to take when someone discloses abuse?
- Stay calm and listen
- Go slowly
- Reassure them that they have done nothing wrong
- Be supportive
- Gather essential facts (keeps F22 in mind)
- Explain your process of reporting
- Follow protocol and procedure
- Debrief

What are some of the things to avoid when someone discloses abuse?
- investigating
- contacting either parent in a parent is the abuser
- make false promises
- ask why questions
- ask to see physical marks
- take a statement
When an abuse case is urgent, who should you call and what should you do with the child?
- FCS
- don’t let the child out of your sight until a SW has taken them
If a child is being corporally punished and you ask to meet with the parents and they don’t show, what should you do?
- immediately report it
If abuse has taken place, but it is no longer a threat, what ought one do?
- if the child is over 12, it’s up to them as to whether they want to report it
- if the child is under 12, it needs to be reported, but “green light”

Under section 54 of the Criminal Law….
the reporting of abuse must be reported to FCS DSD SW and a SW must be assigned to the case ON THE SAME DAY
Who needs to fill out the form 22?
- whoever FIRST hears about the abuse and refers to you (teacher etc)
- provided they are a professional who can do so
All correspondence with the DSD, FCS etc should have a….
paper trail - even if you phone, send a follow up email to reiterate and confirm what was said
The three steps to the abuse reporting process are:
- Disclosure
- child discloses abuse
- inform child that you need to report the abuse - Reporting
- immediately inform onsite and Cornerstone supervisor as well as all relevant parties (SAPS, FCS, WCED SW) - Follow up
- Inform child who has been informed and what your role will be in this process
- follow up if a SW has been assigned, get info and treatment process

What is the SIAS policy?
SNA 1 - teacher (*teacher sets up intervention)
If intervention doesn’t work, teacher about whats happening in all clases and context (SBST)
SNA 2 - SBST
ISP - Indi support plan
DBST - district based ST (When previous steps don’t work)
Role players and interventions (follow up, see if police/courts are involved etc
- Policy to standardize procedures for all learners who need support
- Aims to enhance participation and inclusion in school
- The steps taken post Form 22
- Ask the teacher to fill one out for referred child

In the case where a child/adolescent client, or their family says that abuse (be it old or recent) has been reported, what do you need to do?
Just follow up that the abuse was in fact reported. Partly so that you ensure that you seeing the client is not interfering with any ongoing investigation
