Define deontology
is the normative ethical theory that the morality of an action should be based on whether that action itself is right or wrong under a series of rules, rather than based on the consequences of the action.
How does Kant define an imperative
A command that comes from within ones self
What are the two types of imperatives
Hypothetical and categorical
What is a hypothetical imperative
One that in contingent on a want or need. “If you’re thirsty, then drink water”
What is a categorical imperative
A moral command. “Don’t kill” “Don’t steal”.
What is Kant’s first Formulation to the imperative
A maxim (moral rule) should only be followed if it can be universalized for everyone to follow
What is Kant’s second formulation
All humans are intrinsically valuable. People are not “merely” a means to an end.
What is Kant’s third formulation
We are each creators of our own moral rules, fully autonomous
How is Kant’s theory different from consequentialist
He believed the intention is more important than the consequence.
